Safety is a main concern for caregivers of persons with Autism. Attraction to water, complusive behaviors and lack of response to verbal direction are a few things that can often lead to frightening situations.
We have gathered several resources to help your family be more prepared for emergency situations. it is often difficult to tell those around you that your child has Autism, but we suggest that this is an important step in maintaining your child's safety. Talk to your close neighbors, inform your child's teachers, talk to all those who may supervise your child.
Filling out a "My Child" outline is a great place to start. This will be a simple way to break down your child's common behaviors, stresses, triggers, and how to cope with them. It is also a great place to list your child's abilities, strengths, and talents.
An "ID Card" is a must for school age children and adults. We also suggest having several personalized "Informational Cards" handy for those awkward public situations that arise.
These are examples that may be edited and adjusted as needed for your family.
